The PlayStation 3 video game console has been produced in various models during its life cycle. At launch, the PlayStation 3 was available with either a 20, 40, 60, or 80 GB hard disk drive in the US and Japan, priced from US$499 to US$599; and with either a 40, 60, or 80 GB hard disk drive in Europe, priced from £299 to £425.[1] Since then, Sony have released two further redesigned models, the 'Slim' and 'Super Slim' models. As of December 2013, the total number of consoles sold is estimated at 77 million.[2]

The PS3 emulates the PS2's GPU, hence the term hybrid. Europeans never got the full hardware BC that North America and Japan received. Original 60 GB model

There are several original PlayStation 3 hardware models, which are commonly referred to by the size of their included hard disk drive: 20, 40, 60, 80, or 160 GB.[3][4] Although referred to by their HDD size, the capabilities of the consoles vary by region and release date. The only difference in the appearance of the first five models was the color of the trim, number of USB ports, the presence or absence of a door (which covers the flash card readers on equipped models) and some minor changes to the air vents. All retail packages include one or two Sixaxis controllers or a DualShock 3 controller (beginning June 12, 2008[5][6]), one Type-A to Mini-B USB cable (for connecting the controller and PlayStation Portable to the system), one composite video/stereo audio output cable, one Ethernet cable (20, 60 and CECHExx 80 GB only) and one power cable.[4][7][8]

All models support software emulation of the original PlayStation,[9][10] but support for PlayStation 2 backward compatibility diminished with later compatible models and the last model to have integrated backward compatibility was the NTSC 80 GB (CECHE) Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle.[11] Compatibility issues with games for both systems are detailed in a public database hosted by the manufacturer.[12] All models, excluding the 20 GB model, include 802.11 b/gWi-Fi.

In addition to all of the features of the 20 GB model, the 60 GB model has internal IEEE 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, multiple flash card readers (SD/MultiMedia Card, CompactFlash Type I/Type II, Microdrive,[13] Memory Stick/PRO/Duo) and a chrome colored trim.[14] In terms of hardware, the 80 GB model CECHE released in South Korea is identical to the 60 GB model CECHC released in the PAL regions, except for the difference in hard drive size.[15]The European 60GB model (CECHC), the South Korean and North American CECHE 80GB model excludes the PlayStation 2 'Emotion Engine' CPU chip with it being replaced by an emulated version via the Cell Broadband Engine.[11] However, it retains the 'Graphics Synthesizer' GPU resulting in a hybrid hardware and software emulation.[16] Due to the elimination of the 'Emotion Engine' and its replacement with a software-emulated version, the level of PlayStation 2 compatibility was slightly reduced.[11] The 40 GB, 80 GB (CECHL,CECHM,and CECHK) and 160 GB models have two USB ports instead of the four USB ports on other models and do not include multiple flash card readers, SACD support,[17] or backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games.[11][18] This was due to the removal of 'Graphics Synthesizer' GPU, which stripped the units of all PlayStation 2 based hardware.[19][20]

No official Wi-Fi or flash memory card readers were ever released by Sony for the 20 GB system, although Sony had plans to do so.[21] As of September 2009, Sony had placed no further emphasis on these proposed add-ons.[20] Nevertheless, as the model features four USB 2.0 ports, wireless networking and flash memory card support can already be obtained through the use of widely available external USB adapters and third-party PS3-specific media hubs.[11]

It was rumored that the Cell processors in the third-generation PS3s (40 GB, 2008 80 GB (CECHL,CECHM,CECHK) and 160 GB) would move from a 90 nm process to the newer 65 nm process,[22] which SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai later confirmed,[23] and later to 45 nm. This change lowers the power consumption of the console and makes it less expensive to produce.[24]

Slim model[edit]

The redesigned version of the PlayStation 3 (commonly referred to as the 'PS3 Slim' and officially branded 'PS3') features an upgradeable 120 GB, 160 GB,[25][26] 250 GB or 320 GB[25][26] hard drive and is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% (CECH-20xx) or 45% (CECH-21xx) less power than the previous model,[27][28][29] or one third of the original PS3 model. The Cell microprocessor has moved to a 45 nm manufacturing process, which lets it run cooler and quieter than previous models, and the cooling system has been redesigned.[30] The RSX moved to a 40 nm process[31] in the latest revision. The PS3 slim also includes support for CEC (more commonly referred to by its manufacturer brandings of BraviaSync, VIERA Link, EasyLink etc.) which allows control of the console over HDMI by using the TV's remote control. The PS3 Slim no longer has the 'main power' switch like the previous PS3 models, similar to redesigned slimline PlayStation 2. Support for emulation to play PS2 titles is not present in the Slim version, however shortly after the release of the PS3 slim, Sony announced a new series of PS2 remasters called Classics HD as in PS2 and PSP titles remastered in HD for the PS3 with Trophies and sometimes PlayStation Move compatibility added.[27][28] As of October 2011, PS2 classics are available for purchase in the PlayStation Store.[32]

The PS3 slim was officially released on September 1, 2009, in North America and Europe and on September 3, 2009, in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.[27][28][33][34] However, some retailers such as Amazon.com, Best Buy and GameStop started to sell the PS3 slim on August 25, 2009.[35][36] The PS3 Slim sold in excess of a million units in its first 3 weeks on sale.[37] A 250 GB Final Fantasy XIII-themed PS3 Slim, which was white in color with pink designs, was officially announced on September 24, 2009 at the Tokyo Game Show as part of a bundle in Japan for Final Fantasy XIII, it was initially revealed in U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filings as the PS3 CECH-2000B.[38][39] Sony Computer Entertainment Australia also announced later that day that it would be bringing the 250 GB PS3 slim to Australia which would be bundled with other games and will not feature the Final Fantasy XIII theme. Although no North American bundles have been announced for the 250 GB PS3 slim, it is sold as a stand-alone console in North America.[40]

In July 2010, Sony announced two new sizes of Slim PS3, 160 GB and 320 GB, with the 120 GB model being discontinued in Japan.[26] These were launched on July 29, 2010, in Japan, with the 160 GB version available in 'Classic White' as well as the standard 'Charcoal Black'.[26] The black 160 GB version was also made available as a bundle with the Japan-only DVR accessory torne.[25] It was later announced that the new sizes were to be launched in other regions, with the 160 GB model available from August 2010 in North America[41] and October 2010 in Europe.[42] The 320 GB model is to be available in North America only as part of a bundle with PlayStation Move, a PlayStation Eye and a copy of Sports Champions,[41] and in Europe with PlayStation Move, a PlayStation Eye and a demo disc.[42] The bundles were released on September 19, 2010, and September 15, 2010, respectively, to coincide with the launch of PlayStation Move.[41][42]

Super Slim model[edit]

A Super Slim PS3

In September 2012, Sony announced that a new slimmer PS3 redesign (CECH-4000) was due to be released in late 2012 and that it would be available with either a 250 GB or 500 GB hard drive.[43]

In PAL regions, the 250 GB model is not available; a model with 12 GB of flash memory (CECH-4000A) is available in its place.[44] A standalone 250 GB hard drive (CECH-ZHD1) is available to upgrade this model.[44][45] In the UK, the 500 GB model was released on September 28, 2012,[44] while the 12 GB model was made available on October 12, 2012.[44]

CECH-4000B consoles (those with hard drives) weigh approximately 2.1 kg (4.6 lb),[43][44] while the CECH-4000A weighs approximately 2.0 kg (4.4 lb).[45] Both are roughly 25% smaller and about 20% lighter than the original PS3 Slim. This version has a sliding disc cover rather than the slot-loading drive found on previous PlayStation 3 consoles (The sliding disc cover was used on Sony BRAVIA KDL22PX300 TV build-in PlayStation 2 console).

A CECH-4200 model with nearly identical hardware to that of the CECH-4000 model was introduced in 2013 to follow the AACS rule of inhibiting analog (component and composite) output of Blu-ray disc content effective since 2014. While in previous 3000 and 4000 models the output limit was already set at 480i to meet a Jan 1st 2011 deadline in agreement also with the aforementioned AACS.[46]

A vertical stand (CECH-ZST1J) is also available for these models and was launched on the same day as the consoles in their respective regions.[45]

A PlayStation 3 console with a Sixaxis controller

The PlayStation 3 technical specifications describe the various components of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console.

  • 3Configurations
  • 6Power consumption
  • 7Disc drive

Core processing unit[edit]

PS3 CPU-'Cell Broadband Engine'

The PS3 uses the Cellmicroprocessor, which is made up of one 3.2 GHzPowerPC-based 'Power Processing Element' (PPE) and six accessible Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). A seventh runs in a special mode and is dedicated to aspects of the OS and security, and an eighth is a spare to improve production yields. PlayStation 3's Cell CPU achieves a theoretical maximum of 230.4 GFLOPS in single precisionfloating point operations and up to 15 GFLOPS double precision[1]

The PS3 has 256 MB of RambusXDR DRAM, clocked at CPU die speed.[1] The PPE has 64 KB L1 cache and 512 KB L2 cache, while the SPEs have 2 MB local memory (256 KB per SPE),[2] connected by the Element Interconnect Bus (EIB) with up to 307.2 GB/s bandwidth.

Graphics processing unit[edit]

PS3 GPU-RSX 'Reality Synthesizer'

According to Nvidia, the RSX—the graphics processing unit (GPU)—is based on the NVIDIAG70 (previously known as NV47) architecture. The GPU is clocked at 500 MHz and makes use of 256 MB GDDR3RAM clocked at 650 MHz with an effective transmission rate of 1.3 GHz.[3] The RSX has a floating-point performance of 192 GFLOPS.[4]

Configurations[edit]

PS3 NTSC COK-001 motherboard (60 GB version)
PS3 PAL COK-002 motherboard

To date, the PS3 has had several component revisions which serve to reduce power consumption. This in turn results in production savings, lower heat production, lower cooling requirements and quieter running. Since launch, the Cell processor has shrunk from 90 nm to 45 nm. The RSX GPU has also seen reduction in size over periodic revisions of the PS3.

Major improvements were introduced with the PS3 Slim. It utilized a 45 nm Cell which resulted in a 34% reduction in power consumption over the previous 65 nm Cell model;[5] the latest Slim model further decreases power consumption with the move to a 40 nm RSX.

In terms of audio, the PS3 supports a number of formats, including 7.1 digital audio, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and others; audio output is possible over stereo RCA cables (analog), optical digital cables, or HDMI. The PS3 slim features an upgraded HDMI chip that allows bitstreaming of lossless audio codecs to an external receiver (earlier versions had to decode the signal internally before outputting it via LPCM).[25].

In the early 60 GB and 80 GB configurations, flash memory can also be used, either Memory Sticks; CompactFlash cards; or SD/MMC cards. All models support USB memory devices; flash drives and external hard drives are both automatically recognized. However, they must be formatted with the FAT32 file system.[26]

Earlier systems sported up to four USB 2.0 ports at the front (20 and 60 GB models, as well as the NTSC 80 GB), but the 40 GB and 80 GB PAL models only have two USB ports. All models released after August 2008 have been reduced to two USB ports at the front, as well as dropping CompactFlash and SD card support.

For networking, all models provide one Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000) RJ45 port.

Bluetooth 2.0 support, and built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi (except CECHBxx).

The original PlayStation 3's case was designed by Teiyu Goto of Sony, and uses the Spider-Man 3 font.[29] It has a glossy piano-black finish, and the power and eject buttons are touch-sensitive.

The PlayStation 3 Slim is quieter and more compact than its predecessor. The engraved logo is an update of the PS2's with curved edges[30].

The PlayStation 3 Super Slim weighs at least 25% less than the Slim due in part to the slot-loadingBlu-ray drive being replaced with a top-load disc reader similar to the original PlayStation's, but with a sliding cover[31].

Power consumption[edit]

The power consumption of the initial PlayStation 3 units, based on 90 nm Cell CPU, ranges from 170–200 W during normal use, despite having a 380 W power supply.[32]

The power consumption of newer 40 GB PlayStation 3 units (65 nm process Cell/90 nm RSX), ranges from 120-140 W during normal use.[33]

The power consumption of 'slim' PlayStation 3 (45 nm process Cell/40 nm RSX) ranges from 65-84 W during normal use. [34]

Universal power supply[edit]

The power supply can operate on both 60 Hz and 50 Hz power grids. It uses a standard IEC 60320 C14 (IEC 60320 C8 for the PS3 slim) connector and a C13 (C7 for the PS3 slim) power cord appropriate for the region it is being used in. The power supply on the 'fat' model is 380 W. This was reduced to 250 W in the 120 GB 'Slim' model. PS3 Slim models have labels indicating localized input requirements for power (110 V 60 Hz for North American and Japanese models and 220-240 V 50 Hz for European and Australian models), however teardowns have revealed the slim power supplies are still universal.[35]

Disc drive[edit]

The PlayStation 3 disc drive is an all-in-one type allowing the use of different formats.

Official accessories[edit]

The PlayStation 3 Sixaxis[40] is a controller that is very similar in appearance to that of its predecessors, the DualShock and DualShock 2. The SIXAXIS features finer analog sensitivity;[41] more trigger-like R2 and L2 buttons; a PS ('home') button; and a USBmini-B port for charging the internal battery and for wired play. The PlayStation 3 supports up to 7 simultaneous controllers over Bluetooth.[42] The Sixaxis is named for its ability to detect motion in the full six degrees. The Sixaxis controller also has no vibration feature.

At its press conference at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced the DualShock 3 (trademarked DUALSHOCK 3), a PlayStation 3 controller with the same function and design as the Sixaxis, but with vibration capability.[43] Hands-on accounts describe the controller as being slightly heavier than the standard Sixaxis controller, and capable of vibration forces comparable to the DualShock 2.[44]

The PlayStation 3 Memory Card Adaptor is a device that allows data to be transferred from PlayStation and PlayStation 2 memory cards to the PlayStation 3's hard disk. The device has a cable that connects to the PS3's USB port on one end, and features a legacy PS2 memory card port on the other end.

Using Bluetooth, the PlayStation 3 BD Remote allows users to control videos and music on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. In Japan, the device was available starting December 7, 2006. The PS3 will accept signals only via its Bluetooth Remote, as the console does not have an infrared receiver; this prevents the use of universal remotes with the system. The Blu-ray Disc movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby was included with the initial 400,000 release copies of the PS3 in North America,[45] while the first 500,000 European PlayStation Network activations after launch received a free copy of the Blu-ray release of Casino Royale.[46]

On April 25, 2007, Sony announced the PlayStation Eye. This is an updated version of the PlayStation 2 peripheral, the EyeToy. The camera is capable of capturing 60 frames per second video at 640×480 resolution and 120 frame/s video at 320×240 resolution. The four-channel microphone on the Eye can block out background noise. The camera supports live video chat and voice chat without a headset, and was launched in the United States on October 23, 2007, for US$39.99,[47] and in Australia on November 8, 2007, for A$79.95.[48] It was also bundled with the card game The Eye of Judgment released in the United States on the same day as the camera itself for US$69.99,[49] and in Japan and Australia on October 25, 2007 for JP¥9,980 and A$159.95, respectively.[50][51]

Official PlayStation 3 HDMI and Component AV cables are also available for retail.[citation needed]

Backward compatibility[edit]

The PlayStation 3 does not include interfaces for legacy PlayStation peripherals, though IGN.com tested a legacy controller using a PS2-to-USB adapter, finding that it is compatible, though most other devices (such as the Guitar Hero controller) may not be compatible.[52] However, with the release of firmware 1.70 for the PlayStation 3, Sony has added support for previous Guitar Hero controllers with generic PS2-to-USB adapters (although the whammy bar is not functional). Nyko started production on the 'Play Adaptor', a PS2-to-USB adapter allowing for guitars and other PlayStation 2 peripherals to be used on the PlayStation 3 and was scheduled for release in Q2/2007, but Nyko stated at the end of March that the production of this device had been postponed due to compatibility problems with the PS3.[53] The PS3 supports both the USB EyeToy camera/webcam and SOCOM Headset for video and voice chat. A memory card adapter is available so users can copy their old PS/PS2 game saves to a virtual memory card on the PS3's hard drive.[54] The PlayStation 3 can also use Memory Sticks to store and save data for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software.[55] New PlayStation 3 systems no longer support PS2 playback (whether through use of the Emotion Engine & Graphics Synthesizer hardware or through the Graphics Synthesizer and software emulation of the Emotion Engine) or Memory Cards.
