  • Raphael “Tweet” Brown:

The inspiration for the song came from we were recording the album in Jersey and we went out to the club called The Peppermint. We were hanging out with some friends that we had met, and we were dancing with the females. You know, situations took place, and we get back to the house, and this was back when we had the house phone where you could have more than once person on the phone at a time.

So R.L. and I are on the phone with the females, and we were asking them, “Yo so have you ever felt a guy get aroused on the dance floor when you’re dancing?” And they were like, “Yeah.” And we were like, “No. How does that feel?” And they were like “We do it on purpose.” And we didn’t expect that answer. We were like, “What?” And they were like, “Yeah, we do it on purpose.” So then we were like, “Is that a deal breaker?” They were like, “Yeah, if it ain’t…”

So Kay Gee had the beat on downstairs, we went downstairs, wrote the song in like 15 minutes.

  • Raphael “Tweet” Brown:

Working with Kay Gee was a treat. Kay Gee is a genius mind. He is one of the most underrated producers in the game, of all time, because he doesn’t just do rap. He doesn’t just do certain genres. He does pretty much everything. He doesn’t play keys, so he’ll have a guy that plays the keys, and then he pretty much puts everything else together. So working with him wasn’t pressure, it was fun because we wanted to work with everybody that was doing it, because we felt like we could deliver. And so we had a good chemistry with him too.

  • Are the guys from Next still in touch with the girls who inspired this song?

    Raphael “Tweet” Brown:

Yeah we still know the females that were part of the song. We’re still just friends. We’re all still cool. But at the end of the day it’s like they’re part of history, you know? And they were cool about it. You know how some people would try to get credit or somethin for that. But their credit is they were a part of it. They were a part of the subject that birthed somethin that’s gonna be here for the rest of our lives.

  • R.L.:

He’ll go, “You know, that’s too musical. Take this out. Do this.” It was hard for us in the beginning because we’re musical cats, so when you’re writing to a breakbeat, there’s no melody to follow. There’s no bed to really write your melody over. So it was a struggle in the beginning because it was almost like a skeleton of a track. When we would first start, it would be just this sample like playin over and over again, just looped 8 bars, 16 bars, so you gotta write to that and still come up with changes. But he believed in us, and when you have somebody that great believing in you feel like you can accomplish anything.

  • R.L.:

No I wasn’t worried, only because it’s not coming from a distasteful or disrespectful place. It’s coming from an honest place, and we’re basically saying that you being close to me turns me on. And we’re just saying it in a young mannish way. You know that was 20 years ago, maybe 19, just turning 20 for me. At the time, I was really trying to be up on any and everything and again it was a time where you went to the club to dance. You were waiting for the night to wind down, hoping, OK, she’s a little bit inebriated. Not to the point where she doesn’t know what she’s doing. She knows what she’s doing, but she’s a little more relaxed. Her guard is down. She’s down. She’s ready to have fun. She’s been watching you. You’ve been watching her. There’s a connection. Now y'all dancin'. You been waiting for this Jodeci to come on, this H town to come on. Hell, you been waitin for this intro to come on so you can get close to her and this is now that moment… “Hey, let me show you how it could be without clothes. Lets just, lets get close.”

  • How did the idea come about to add the female perspective?

    Terry “T-Low” Brown:

R.L. and Tweet wrote the song. How Vee’s part came about, the female, it’s basically, we said our perspective. Also, making a record, it’s like, “OK, we want the crowd and the ladies to be involved when we perform.” Once we recorded the song if you think about i, every time we perform that record, every female in the audience sings that part back. So they become a part of the song. So it’s like, we’ve allowed them to be a part of this.
